Alcohol Testing in the Workplace: an Employer’s Choice

There are many different types of alcohol testing. From the breathalyzer to intensive urine alcohol testing or hair alcohol testing,  there are many ways employers can get the information they are seeking. Here is a brief overview of several different types of alcohol testing.

Blood Alcohol Test

A blood alcohol test measures the amount of ethanol in the body. This type of test can be very useful in determining the amount of alcohol in the blood when someone is suspected of being intoxicated; it may be used to find the cause of an altered mental state. When a situation exists where alcohol is prohibited, this test may be used to determine whether or not the consumption of alcohol has taken place.

Urine Alcohol Test

Urine alcohol tests are simply not as accurate as other forms of alcohol testing. While a urine test can show the amount of alcohol in the body, it does not show the person’s present condition. Since it takes several hours for the alcohol to pass through the body, the test will not be an accurate indication of their present state. Further, this test can vary widely based on a person’s metabolism.  This type of testing is also not helpful in the case of an emergency, because it takes hours for a lab to test and deliver the results.

Hair Alcohol Test

Hair Alcohol Tests can get results that a regular blood alcohol test cannot. It is simple and accurate and requires only a small bit of hair. You might see a blood alcohol test being used on a person who is intoxicated, like a drunk driver that gets pulled over. While this may be effective in the moment, alcohol is quickly lost in the blood because it breaks down so quickly. In the hair, however, tiny traces of alcohol metabolite are trapped and save an alcohol history in its roots. Each half inch of head hair provides a 30-day history of alcohol use. This can allow employers to examine a person’s alcohol use over a period of months rather than days or even hours.

Whether employers continue to simply do a background check or progress to both drug testing and alcohol testing, one thing is certain: It has an effect on their bottom line.  While minor drug and alcohol use may not seem to impact employers, it starts to take a toll when their employees are missing work.  While a short-term effect may just be one missed day of work and a bad hangover, this may progress to a weakened immune system, meaning more missed work, more doctors visited and increased healthcare costs. Healthcare costs are already on the rise, and employers and already looking for ways in which to decrease them. Perhaps in the future they will look toward drug testing and alcohol testing as a solution or at least a step in becoming more drug and alcohol free.

Know about all the processes of drug test

Now in every company authorities are very strict about the rules and regulations related with drug test and regular drug test. Every company is concern about their profit and they want to make sure at the time of recruitment that every employee they are recruiting are very much eligible to give then back their expectations. So they do not want to keep any gap in their preparation and want employees very responsible and sincere. Therefore any kind of addiction like drug test and other things are big no no I this way of selection.

In most cases the employees need to go under a few tests like saliva test, urine test, hair test to pass a drug test. One of the most common method testing is a urine test. In most of the cases the urine sample of the subject is collected and either checked with a panel kit or is sent to the lab for a thorough test depending on the need of the employer. Instant testing is relatively simple, inexpensive, and yet highly accurate.

It has been seen through several surveys that almost 80% of the employers are in favor of testing their employees to be clear of drugs. As most naturally they want the best out of them. Other than the urine test there are several methods of finding out tresses of drugs in your body. As for example the saliva test: In this process the sample of the person’s saliva is tested to find out tresses of drug in the body. But this is not much of a very effective method as through this only the usage of drugs in the past few days can be found. But intake of drugs before that period cannot be determined. Also there are other methods like hair test or the hair follicle test. In this process the result can be more accurate than the saliva test. Incase the subject doesn’t have hair on his head; his hair follicle is tested for the same purpose, though this is a bit more painful process for the candidate. The drawback of the hair test is that, though it can give results depending on the usage of drugs for quite longer period or even drug usage about a month earlier, but in this process the very recent usage cannot be found out. The best process is however the blood test and perhaps gives the most accurate results.

Moreover, the process of testing drugs should be done with a lot of care. It is essential to ensure that the samples are safe from alterations. And for collecting the samples clean and disposable containers should be used so that there may not be any mistake. The containers should also be labeled and sealed properly in the presence of the witness and the testing should be done as soon as possible for acidity and temperature. Also it should be taken care of that the testing is done by some expert technician. It should always be kept in mind that the final result also depends on all these factors and the question of the job of a person is at stake.
